Renewed General NPDES Storm Water Permit Issued

On April 3, 2009, the Illinois EPA issued the renewed General NPDES Permit for Storm Water Discharges from Industrial Activities. The Illinois EPA mailed the renewed permit to covered facilities. The new General Storm Water Permit has significant new requirements compared to the previous version, including:

  • Quarterly storm water monitoring
  • Electronic submittal of the Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) to the Illinois EPA for public posting
  • Revisions to the SWPPP to address new elements of the permit

If your facility is covered by the General Storm Water Permit, you should develop a storm water monitoring strategy so you are able to collect and analyze the storm water samples as required by the permit. Admiral can assist you in developing a strategy.

Facilities that are covered by an NPDES Storm Water Permit are also required to have a Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP). If you have not yet developed a plan or the SWPPP needs to be updated to conform with the new permit requirements and current plant conditions, we can help prepare this for you.

At Admiral Environmental Services, we have 40 years of experience meeting the needs of industry. If you have any questions regarding these or other Storm Water issues, please give us a call. You can also contact me directly.

P.S. These storm water permitting rules do not apply to facilities that are serviced by a combined sewer system (e.g., most of the City of Chicago).
